Machavern Captures US Majors Eastern Conference Title in GT-1
Altamonte Springs, FL/July 9, 2013 – Dillon Machavern has always wanted to compete at the famed Watkins Glen International Raceway, but never could due to the tracks imposed 18 year old age limit. With his 18th birthday now a few weeks behind him, the track’s imposed 18-year-old age limit was no longer an obstacle. This past weekend marked his first of what he hopes to be many successful weekends on what has become one of his favorite tracks. Machavern competed in both the GT-1 and Spec Miata (SM) classes during this past weekends’ BF Goodrich Tires Super Tour – SCCA US Majors Tour double race weekend.
While Dillon was learning to drive the technical track and find his racing line in the Spec Miata, the Panic Motorsports team was also having a first time experience at The Glen. Driver and crew worked together making adjustments to find the proper set-up. “I really loved Watkins Glen, you can really attack the track in the Miata.” Machavern continues; “By the end of the weekend the team had a good handle on the set up and I was getting really comfortable with my line and we were one of the three fastest cars on track in my second SM race.” Dillon qualified the #54 Miata in 23rd and 25th places for his two races, and showed great race craft, finishing 17th and 13th respectfully in the Spec Miata class for the weekend.
Dillon also competed in the GT-1 class in his #29 ’63 Ford Falcon. He would have two races in the Riggins Engineering prepared machine, starting from second position in Race 1 and from Pole position in Race 2. Machavern finished on the podium in 2nd in the first event that ended under full-course caution, and 4th in the second race after a last lap spin while passing for the lead would put him in the gravel trap. Machavern received the trophy for winning the US Majors Eastern Conference Title on the weekend, as well as maintaining his lead in the SCCA National Points Standings. An excited Machavern states; “This truly has been a team effort. I would like to thank my parents for giving me the opportunity to race, the crew from Riggins Engineering for preparing the ’63 Falcon, and to Tommy Riggins himself for his guidance and building a great car!”
